This bamboo has short, broad leaves on slender culms with prominent nodes and short branches. Prefers acid soil and is very cold hardy.

A moderate spreading bamboo with shallow rhizomes which makes it easy to control. Is often seen trimmed into a ball-like shape. It can also be used as a short hedge or ground cover.
